FUNERALIA has equipped the new building of the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The new building at the University of Bern for the Institute of Forensic Medicine and for the Department for BioMedical Research (DBMR) was planned to be a flexible and future-oriented laboratory building. As part of this project, FUNERALIA was commissioned to equip the cold rooms and has installed 4 refrigerated cabinets, all tailored to the individual needs of the user:

– One cabinet with double access, designed for the discrete transfer of bodies from one room to another.

– One cabinet with individually cooled, spatially separated hatches to enable round-the-clock delivery of the bodies and prevent unauthorised access. The specific

hatches are suitable for the installation of a locking system with access control and were pre-equipped accordingly.

– One large, refrigerated cabinet that includes 3 different compartments: 1 compartment with switchover between normal operating range and low temperature (4°C and -20°C) for 3 bodies, 1 compartment for 12 and 1 compartment for 3 obese bodies in normal refrigeration.

– A walk-in deep-freeze laboratory cold room (-20° degrees).

A special feature of the project consists in the integration of the refrigerated cabinets directly into the drylining so that only the front of the cabinets is visible in the room. In order to optimise the energy efficiency of the project, water cooling was chosen for all installed cabinets and cold rooms.
